Update on the Ja Morant Injury & the Rest of the Report
After missing the series’ second game with right hand soreness, Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant was able to suit up in Game 3. While he may have still felt some soreness, you couldn’t tell by the stat line: Morant compiled 45 points, 13 assists and 9 rebounds in 41.5 minutes of action. Perhaps more importantly, Morant dropped 22 straight points in the 4th quarter, spurring on an ill-fated Grizzlies comeback attempt.
It is expected that Morant will be in the starting lineup Monday, and he will likely play a crucial role in any sort of comeback effort by the Grizzlies. However, there are some other question marks for the Grizzlies in Game 4: Dillon Brooks was ejected from the game a few seconds into the second half after punching LeBron James in the groin. Whether he is suspended further remains to be seen.
Here is a full list of players with injury concerns heading into Monday:
- Memphis Grizzlies: Ja Morant (hand, probable), Steven Adams (knee, out), Jake LaRavia (calf, doubtful)
- Los Angeles Lakers: Anthony Davis (foot, probable), LeBron James (foot, probable), Dennis Schroder (achilles, probable)
Memphis Grizzlies vs. Los Angeles Lakers Game 4 Predictions
Our top Grizzlies vs. Lakers best bet is for the Lakers to continue their dominance and extend the series lead to three games in Game 4. Oddsmakers seem to agree with this Grizzlies vs. Lakers best bet prediction, with the Lakers currently positioned as 4.5-point favorites with -190 money line odds.
The Lakers have been one of the NBA’s top offensive units, ranking 10th in the league in field goal percentage, 8th in total field goals, 2nd in total free throws made, and 6th in points scored. They’ve also been solid defensively, corralling the second-most defensive rebounds in the league and holding opponents to the second-worst three-point percentage in the NBA.
However, the Grizzlies have been just fine on both sides of the ball in 2023 as well: they rank in the top-ten in the NBA in field goals, shot attempts, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, and points. Still, the Grizzlies are running into trouble not as a result of a skill discrepancy; instead, it has been the individual matchups that have cursed Memphis.
Both teams like to play on the inside, ranking in the top ten in two-point shots made. Still, with Steven Adams out, the Grizzlies are in a bad shape in the paint. The only remaining starting big man is Jarren Jackson Jr., and though he’s been very good this season (18.6 PPG, 6.8 RPG, and a league-leading 3.0 BPG), the 6’11” power forward/center might be on his own to defend LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
One of the greatest one-two punches in the history of the NBA, the Grizzlies are going to need to gameplan around stopping James and Davis, likely at the cost of open perimeter shooters. If the Grizzlies don’t have an answer for LeBron and AD, they can be looking at a really long night – and, even if they do, we don’t think things will go much better. As a result, we love the Lakers -4.5 (-110 at DraftKings) as our Grizzlies vs. Lakers best bet.
Player Prop Picks & Grizzlies vs. Lakers Best Bets for 4/24 Featuring Desmond Bane & Rui Hachimura
There are a few players who are a part of our Grizzlies vs. Lakers best bets regarding player props even before all the lines have been released. The first of these is Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane’s total points prop. The over provides solid value sitting at 20.5 with -130 odds. Bane has averaged 21.5 PPG this season, scoring 22, 17, and 18 points in his three games this series. Expect Bane to play a key role in the offense with the Lakers’ defense focused on stopping Ja Morant.
Finally, we love Rui Hachimura’s total points prop. Though Hachimura only averaged 11.2 PPG in 2023, he has been a man on fire in the playoffs so far. Through three playoff appearances, Hachimura has tallied 29, 20, and 16 points. This is no aberration, either: Hachimura averages over 17 PPG in eight playoff appearances in his career.
We expect Hachimura to remain a key component of the Lakers’ offensive attack, easily surpassing his total points prop if it is set where we expect it to be (closer to his regular season PPG average than his postseason mark).
